(SHERIDAN, Wyo.) Westmont Men's and Women's Golf teed off the 2025-26 season at the Powder Horn Golf Club in Sheridan, Wyoming this week, competing in the Travis Roy Memorial Tournament hosted by South Dakota School of Mines.

The tournament featured 12 strong teams for both the men's and women's tournaments. The Westmont women's team finished in sixth place while the men's team placed seventh.

"I am very proud of both programs," expressed Westmont's head coach Leo Maes. The women did it again, showing they can compete with anyone. Achieving the second-lowest team score on the second day demonstrates that we are ready to compete at a high level.

"I couldn't be prouder of those ladies and what lies ahead this season. With the addition of our assistant coach Harley Richardson, this team will only improve both on and off the course."

The women's team finished 42 over par for two rounds. Their total score of 618 was just eight strokes out of second place. The Warriors were one of only two teams to score under 300 on the second day, posting a tally of 298 strokes.

"Regarding the men's team, this was a statement tournament," offered Maes. "We are prepared to compete both on paper and through our natural talents. I look forward to continuing to build a culture that embodies the Warrior Way through our actions rather than words. This was a great start toward that goal. I am proud of these men; the future looks bright for them."

The men recorded a two-day, 24 over par. Westmont was 12 strokes out of fourth place in a field that included two nationally ranked teams and two more receiving votes.

Individually, junior transfer Karis Haltom finished in ninth place on the women's leaderboard. After carding a 79 for the first round, Haltom posted a one-under 71 on day two. She shot a 36 on the front nine and a 35 coming home.

Junior Hannah Camara tied for 18th in the field of 60, posting rounds of 79 and 75 for a total of 154. Sophomore Kyla Layman tallied a score of 159 improving from a round of 83 on Monday to a round of 76 on Tuesday. Senior Sydnee Magpoc was Westmont's fourth scorer, with rounds of 86 and 76.

On the men's leaderboard, freshman Santiago Lopez Ortiz was the Warriors' low scorer, shooting a one-under 71 in the first round and a 75 in the second round for a total of 146.

Sophomore Jose Licon tied for 14th place, posting a score of 147 with rounds of 75 and an even-par 72. Sophomore Nicolas Rocha was the Warriors' third finisher, tying for 34th place with a score of 153 (74, 79). Freshman Hernan Iriarte finished one stroke further back, recording two rounds of 77.

"I would like to thank the staff at Powder Horn Golf Club," said Maes. "From start to finish, they welcomed us, and the hospitality throughout all three days was exceptional. We are grateful for the opportunity to compete at such a beautiful venue."

Freshly back from Wyoming, the women's team will head to Utah this weekend to compete in the Wasatch Golf Tournament in South Jordan at the Glenmoor Golf Club. The event, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday, September 21 and 22, is hosted by Westminster.

The men's team will next compete at the Danish Classic on October 6-7, which will be conducted at the Alisal Golf Course in Solvang.
