(SOUTH JORDAN, Utah) Just five days after opening the 2025-26 season in Sheridan, Wyoming, the Westmont women's golf team found itself on the Glenmoor Golf Course in South Jordan, Utah for its second tournament of the year. Competing at the Wasatch Golf Tournament hosted by Westminster (Utah), the Warriors finished in second place, just one stroke shy of their hosts.
"I am incredibly proud of this team," expressed Westmont's head coach
Leo Maes. "We had a very quick turnaround before this tournament, and the way we performed truly exemplified the Warrior spirit.
"After the first day, the women were six strokes behind the leader and were in a strong position heading into the second day of the tournament. Following a solid front nine on the second day, the Warriors found themselves in the lead, with Westminster closely trailing. The tournament came down to the last hole, and the team ultimately finished in second place."
As a result of their performance, the Warriors were named the PacWest Women's Golf Team of the Week.
The Warriors were in second place after the first day, posting a team score of 308 behind Metropolitan State Denver (Colo.) who posted a 302. Westminster and Fort Lewis (Colo.) tallied 309, setting up a battle on day two for the top spot.
MSU-Denver gave up ground on the second day, posting a 316. The Warriors took advantage and dropped their score by five strokes, to record a 303, moving seven strokes ahead of the Roadrunners.
However, Westminster posted the tournament's best daily team score on their home course, notching a 301 to beat out the Warriors 610 to 611.
MSU-Denver finished third with 618 while Fort Lewis finished tied for fourth with Colorado Christian at 621. The rest of the 11-team field included four schools from the PacWest: Dominican (633, 6th place), Menlo (642, 8th place), Jessup (646, 9th place), and Vanguard (652, 10th place).
Kayla Layman was the Warriors' top finisher, finishing fourth after posting a two-day, five-over par score of 149 (73, 76). Sydney Magpoc carded a 152 to tie for ninth place with rounds of 79 and 73.
Karis Haltom was one stroke back in an 11th-place tie with a 153 (77, 76), and
Hannah Camara tied for 24th with rounds of 79 and 78 for a total of 157.
"This team is unique; we embrace a growth mindset and seek out opportunities even in challenging situations," described Maes. "We are grateful for this opportunity and recognize how fortunate we are to have each other on this journey.
"We will continue to rely on our faith to guide us in our focus and goals as a program. We now look ahead to competing in Palm Desert."
The Warriors next outing will be on September 28-29 at the Avondale Golf Course in the Lady Bulldogs Invitational hosted by Union (Tenn.).
