(INDIANAPOLIS) The NCAA announced on Sunday, that Westmont Women's Golf has been selected as an at-large participant in the NCAA DII West Regional at the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo Colorado. This is the first time a Westmont golf team has qualified for national championship play.
Â
"I am proud of these ladies and everything they've accomplished this year," said Westmont's head coach
Leo Maes. "I'm incredibly grateful for our athletic administration, alumni, and supporters. What they do for us day in and day out is a big reason we're in this position. Their investment in our program and our student-athletes does not go unnoticed.
Â
"We returned to campus late Wednesday night, still unsure of how selections would play out. From Thursday through Saturday, there was a sense of uncertainty for all of us. As a coach, though, I felt it was important to keep those days as normal as possible. We focused on catching up academically, attending chapel, and simply enjoying our Saturday together.
Â
"For student-athletes like senior Sydnee Magpoc, the unknown can be especially challenging—not knowing if you've played your final round of collegiate golf is a difficult place to be. But through conversations centered on life, growth, prayer and belief, we continued to navigate the uncontrollable together.
Â
"Regardless of the outcome, we are grateful for the opportunity we've had. Today was a great reminder of that, starting with church in the morning, followed by the WESPYS celebrating our student-athletes.
Â
"Now, we reset and prepare for what's ahead, hopeful for another opportunity to earn our way into a national setting by the end of next week."
Â
The Warriors are one of 18 teams to advance to the West Regional. Two other PacWest schools are also a part of the field: Hawai'i Hilo, who earned an automatic qualification by winning the PacWest Tournament, and Point Loma who came in second.
Â
The regional, which will be held Monday-Wednesday, May 4-6, consists of three rounds of golf (54 holes). The top five teams at the West Regional, along with the top two individuals not on a top-five team, will advance to the NCAA DII National Championship.
Â
The championship final will be held May 12-16 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Â
The 15 other teams participating in the West Region are last year's national champion Dallas Baptist, Texas at Tyler, Cal Stat San Marcos, St. Mary's (Texas), Colorado State Pueblo, West Texas A&M, Midwestern State, Cal State Los Angeles, Simon Fraser, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State East Bay, Angelo State, Lubbock Christian, Texas A&M International and Colorado Christian.
