Johnny Whallon

Johnny Whallon joined the Westmont men’s soccer staff in January of 2013. Whallon serves as Dave Wolf’s lead assistant coach, as well as the team's recruiting coordinator.

With Whallon on staff, the Warriors won double-digit games four seasons in a row from 2016-2019 and have won Golden State Athletic Conference titles in four of the past five years, qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament on three occasions.

In 2016, he helped Westmont to a shared GSAC regular season championship, its first conference regular season title since 2002. In 2017, he helped coached the team to a GSAC Tournament crown and its first NAIA National Tournament berth since 2008.

The 2019 team won the GSAC regular season after finishing undefeated in conference play for the first time in 30 years. The Warriors began the season 6-0, the best start to a campaign in program history, before reaching the Round of 16 of the NAIA National Tournament.

In 2020, Whallon aided the team's journey through navigating the COVID-19 pandemic that saw the club's season not actually begin until February of 2021.

Regardless of circumstance, the club rallied together, going 7-2-1 including 5-0-1 in GSAC play to win the conference regular season championship. The icing on the cake came when the Warriors went on the road and defeated OUAZ in the GSAC Championship by a score of 2-1, with the game-winner coming in the 90th minute.

Prior to coming to Westmont, Whallon had coaching stints at Gordon College in Massachusetts, The Stony Brook School in New York, and Wheaton College in Illinois.

Originally from the Boston area, Whallon graduated from Wheaton College (Ill.) in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and played for the Thunder for all four years. During his studies, Whallon also attended Westmont for a consortium semester in 2005, a move he credits for “having a pivotal role” in his growth and development as a player and coach.

Growing up in New England, Whallon attended Bedford High School (Mass.), before being a post-graduate student at Phillips Academy in Andover.

Throughout the years, Whallon has enjoyed serving on staff at a number of elite college summer camps around the country including camps at Georgetown University, Notre Dame University, The Naval Academy, UCLA, UCSB and the University of Washington. Whallon noted, "These external coaching experiences have played an important role in shaping my philosophy as a coach, and have also allowed me to develop relationships with other coaches, something I highly value."

From 2015-2019, Whallon worked as an assistant coach for the Ventura County Fusion, a USL-2 team (formerly PDL) based in Ventura, California. During this time, Whallon coached some of the best college players in America and was mentored by highly respected Rudy Ybarra. The Fusion played a number of professional teams during his stint with the organization, including USL Championship and MLS teams, as well as several Mexican and European franchises.

Whallon also works in the local youth soccer scene with Santa Barbara Soccer Club, and is currently the head coach of the boys 2006 MLS NEXT team and a club administrator.

Whallon is certified with the U.S Soccer Federation "A-Senior" Coaching License and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Coaching Diploma.

Whallon is currently earning his master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration at Concordia-Irvine.

Whallon and his wife Lauren live in Santa Barbara.
