Delayed Doubleheader Doesn't Go Westmont's Way

Westmont Baseball (4-8, 1-3) was scheduled for a doubleheader against Concordia on Saturday, but the teams could only get one game in Saturday due to the rain. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Saturday's game ended in 13-7 loss despite home runs from senior catcher Dominick Paluso and sophomore center fielder Vinny Lopez. On Monday, the Warriors returned to Irvine for the seven inning make-up game which they lost 4-3.

Center fielder Lopez started Saturday's game with a lead off home run to left field to spot Westmont to a 1-0 lead. The Warriors added a second run in the first inning when sophomore right fielder Ryan McGill drove an RBI double to left-center field scoring freshman second baseman Nate Shaver from third. Shaver reached first base on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error.

Shaver walked again to lead off the top of the third inning and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field by Dominick Paluso. The resulting 3-0 lead evaporated in the bottom of the third as Concordia scored three runs on four hits and a walk off of Westmont starter Kevin Fouret.

A lead off walk in the top of the fourth inning by senior third baseman Jordan Ballard led to another Warrior run. Ballard stole second base and later scored on an RBI single to right by left fielder Darren Fouret.

Back-to-back lead off singles set up a three-run home run by Concordia's Brett Shaw in the bottom of the fourth which chased Kevin Fouret from the game. Fouret, who recorded a no decision, left the game with three and one-third innings of work in which allowed six runs on seven hits. Freshman Kellen Skersies took the mound in relief. The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double by right fielder Brent Dohling.

Paluso opened the top of the fifth inning with a home run blast to left field to pull the Warriors to within two runs. Westmont added another run on a single to left by sophomore shortstop Phillip Valle which scored Ballard from third. Ballard reached on another walk and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Darren Fouret.

After holding the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning, Westmont tied the game at seven in the top of the sixth. A one-out walk by sophomore first baseman Eric Gaustad resulted in a RBI double to center field by Ballard.

But the tie would not last long as Concordia scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth and added three more in the eighth to record the victory. Skersies (0-2) took the loss for the Warriors having given up four runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Jonathan White took the mound at the start of Monday's game and pitched six innings in which he allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits. The unearned run came in the bottom of the third inning when right fielder Chuy Frausto reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single by second baseman Gregg Davidson.

The Eagles added a second run in the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles by catcher Nick Bernatowicz and Shaw.

Westmont scored twice to even the score in the top of the sixth inning. Lopez led off the inning by reaching first on an error. Shaver followed with an infield single that advanced Lopez to second. After a strike out by Gaustad, Paluso, singled to right, scoring Lopez and advancing Shaver to third. McGill then drove in Shaver on a single up the middle.

The Eagles recaptured the lead in the bottom of the sixth on another set of back-to-back doubles, this time by Dohling and first baseman Enrique Lechuga.

Darren Fouret led off the top of the seventh inning and was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Anthony Martinez replaced Fouret at first base as a pitch runner. Senior Steven Hardesty pinch hit for Valle and successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Martinez to second base. Freshman Joshua Daneshforooz was called upon to pinch hit for Lopez and singled through the right side to score Martinez.

With the score tied at three, McGill replaced White on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Pinch hitter Nick Holton doubled to right center for the Eagles to start the inning and set up the eventual winning run. McGill coaxed center fielder Daniel Robertson to strike out, but Davidson singled to left field to score Holton and end the game.

McGill took the loss for the Warriors, pitching one-third of an inning and giving up one run on two hits.

Westmont will play again this afternoon at UC Santa Barbara in a two o'clock. game before returning to Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday. The Warriors will host Azusa Pacific in a double header on Saturday at Russ Carr Field. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
