Warriors Battle Gauchos

Westmont Baseball (4-9) returned to Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on the campus of UC Santa Barbara this afternoon for the second game with the Gauchos (3-3) in as many weeks. The Warriors scored two runs in the first and another in the third, but it wasn't enough as UCSB came away with a 5-3 victory.

Sophomore center fielder Vinny Lopez led off the game with an infield single to short and later scored on a double to right field by senior catcher Dominick Paluso. Designated hitter Ryan McGill followed Paluso by striking out, but advanced to first when the ball snuck past the Gaucho catcher Matt McColgan. Paluso advanced to third on the pass ball. Warrior third baseman Jordan Ballard was hit by a pitch from Gaucho starter Anthony Martin which loaded the bases with two away. Martin then walked right fielder Darren Fouret to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors' final run came in the third inning when Dominick Paluso belted his fourth home run of the year over the right-center field fence. Paluso is the Warriors career home run leader with 28 round-trippers.

John Evans (1-1) took the loss for the Warriors, pitching two innings and giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits. Kellen Skersies pitched three scoreless inning of relief in which he gave up two hits and one walk. Jon Sakoda and Ryan McGill each pitch one inning without a run while Kevin Fouret gave up one run on one hit in one inning of work.

Martinez (1-0) earned the win for the Gauchos and Justin Segal picked up a save.

The Warriors return to Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they will host Azusa Pacific in a double header at Russ Carr Field. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
