Baseball Drops First of Three to CSU Stanislaus

John White (1-0) pitched seven innings, giving up just one run on five hits, but it wasn't enough as the Warriors (1-2) lost 5-2 in Turlock to Cal State Stanlislaus (CSUS) on Friday afternoon. White left the game after pitching in the bottom of the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead, but CSUS sent ten men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits, two walks and two errors. White struck out six without allowing a walk.

In 12 innings of work this season, White has fanned 11 batters without issuing a free pass and has posted an ERA of 3.75. Westmont's first run came in the second inning off a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Darren Fouret that scored sophomore first baseman Gaustad from third. Gaustad walked with one away and reached third on consecutive singles by sophomore shortstop Phillip Valle and junior designated hitter Hector Chavez.

The Warriors added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Senior catcher Dominick Paluso led off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to third on a single by Gaustad. Valle, batting with runners on the corners and no outs, grounded into a double play which allowed Paluso to score.

CSUS scored one run in the third when left fielder Bret Gordon singled to score second baseman Kevin McCarthy from second. McCarthy had reached second base on a double down the left field line with two outs in the inning. Kiel Zielke (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors in relief, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits while facing three batters.

Westmont will take on CSUS again today in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
