Warriors Sweep Doubleheader at Simpson

Westmont baseball (3-5) faced their first NAIA opponent today and swept a doubleheader at Simpson (1-5) in Redding, California, winning the first game 4-1 and the second 14-2. The victories give the Warriors momentum going into Saturday's Golden State Athletic Conference opening day doubleheader against Point Loma Nazarene at Westmont.

John Evans picked up the win for the Warriors going six innings in his first start of the year. Evans did not allow a run and gave up only three hits. Jake Stretz pitched the final frame of the seven inning game and picked up the save.

Sophomore center fielder Vinny Lopez walked to lead off the game for the Warriors. On the first pitch thrown to Westmont's second batter, second baseman Nate Shaver, Lopez stole second base. And on the second pitch to Shaver, Lopez stole third. Shaver then connected with the ball for a base hit, scoring Lopez and giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead after two at bats. Shaver later scored on a base hit by first baseman Erik Gaustad. Lopez added another steal to go three-for-three in the game.

Westmont scored again in the second inning under similar circumstances. Sophomore shortstop Phillip Valle reached on an error and then stole both second and third. Valle was brought home on a sacrifice fly by left fielder David Stout.

The Warrior's final run came in the top of the fifth. Senior third baseman Jordan Ballard reached on a base hit and stole second base. Senior catcher Dominick Paluso then doubled in Ballard to account for Westmont's final run of the game.

In the second game, Westmont's bats tallied ten hits with Gaustad going three-for-three and knocking in two RBIs. Ballard was two-for-two with one RBI and Darren Fouret picked up two RBIs. Junior Joshua Daneshforooz was one-for-three and crossed the plate three times.

Senior pitcher Kiel Zielke picked up his first collegiate victory. Zielke pitched four innings, allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on only one hit. Junior Jamie Barth, freshman Jon Sakoda and Ballard each pitched one scoreless inning in relief.
