Game Recap: Baseball |

Warrior's Split with The Master's

Westmont Baseball (8-36, 4-26) took the first game 9-8 and lost in the second 5-1 in a doubleheader with The Master's (15-32, 6-24) on Saturday at Russ Carr Field. Prior to the final home games of the 2006 season, Westmont honored ten seniors for their contributions to Warrior Baseball. Senior Ryan McGill went three for four at the plate and knocked in three RBIs to help the Warriors to the win in game one.

Westmont freshman second baseman Nate Shaver led off the bottom of the first with a double to left-center field to get the Warriors started early. Freshman left fielder Nate Dreesmann then reached on an error by the Mustangs' third baseman while Shaver remained at second. However, both runners advanced on a pass ball and McGill walked to fill the bases with Warriors with no outs.

Senior Dominick Paluso then stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field which allowed Shaver to score and both Dreesman and McGill to move up one base. Senior Jordan Ballard followed with an RBI single through the right side to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Westmont added a run in the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by McGill which allowed Senior shortstop Steven Hardesty to score from second base.

Hardesty led off the inning with a single to right center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But the Warriors found themselves behind by two runs when the Mustangs scored twice in the third inning and three times in the fourth. The Warriors drew within one run in the bottom of the fifth on RBI single through the right side by Hardesty which scored Ballard from third.

However, The Master's scored three more times in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors sent ten men to the plate and scored four runs to even the game at eight runs each. Ballard led of the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second with one away on a single to left by senior right fielder Darren Fouret. With two outs, sophomore Anthony Martinez, who had entered the game in the fifth inning, singled to right field to load the bases. Shaver delivered a single through the right side to score Ballard from third base and keep the bases loaded.

Dreesmann then hit a sharply hit ground ball to third base which looked to be the final out. But in a smart base running move, Martinez turned on the jets and beat the Mustang fielder to the third base bag to allow Fouret to score and keep the inning alive. McGill then took his at bat and smashed a 2-2 pitch through the left side which brought both Martinez and Shaver home and ties the score at eight.

The Warriors scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore Erik Gaustad was issued a walk to lead off the inning and then replaced with freshman pinch runner Mike Valdes. A sacrifice bunt by Fouret moved Valdes to second and Martinez delivered the game winning RBI on a single up the middle.

Senior Jake Stretz picked up the win for Westmont, pitching two and two-thirds innings in relief in which he shutdown the Mustangs. Stretz retired eight of ten batters which he faced allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out two. Freshman Kellen Skersies started the game for the Warriors. He pitched six innings allowing five runs, three of which were earned on nine hits. He struck out three without allowing a walk.

In game two, The Master's scored three times in the first inning off of senior starter Zack Turner, and the Warriors could not generate enough offense to mount a comeback. The Master's pitcher Mike Weiss pitched a complete seven-inning game, giving up only one run on ten hits while fanning six and allowing one walk.

Sophomore Jonathan White pitched five and two-thirds innings in relief for the Warriors, giving up two runs on four hits. White struck out four and walked one.

The Warriors lone run came in the first inning. With two outs, McGill singles through the right side. Back-to-back singles to right filed by senior designated hitter Hector Chavez and Ballard allowed McGill to score.

The seniors honored before the game were Ballard, Chavez, Darren and Kevin Fouret, Hardesty, McGill, Paluso, Stretz, Turner, and Kiel Zielke.

The Warriors will conclude the 2006 season on Friday in Santa Clarita against the Mustangs in a doubleheader which begins at 10:00 a.m.
