Game Recap: Baseball |

Eagles Take Two from Warriors

Westmont's hitters struggled to produce offense as the #11 Eagles of Concordia (9-1, 5-1) swept Westmont Baseball (1-8, 0-6) in a doubleheader at Russ Carr Field. The Warriors scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning in game one, which ended with a score of 13-1, and were shut out in the second game 7-0.

Senior Jamie Barth made his first collegiate start in game one for the Warriors, pitching three and two-thirds innings while allowing seven runs, five of which were earned. He struck out two and walked three. Barth was replaced by freshman Brandon Downs who gave up three runs, none of which were earned, on three hits in one and one-third inning of relief. Sophomore Jonathan Sakoda closed out the mound duties for the Warriors, pitching four innings while allowing three runs on five hits.

The Warriors sole run came on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman first baseman Jason Younker on which freshman designated hitter Ryan Haddock scored from third. Haddock originally reached first on a walk and took second on a sacrifice by junior short stop Anthony Martinez. Haddock advanced to third on as a result of walks to junior second baseman Phillip Valle and junior right fielder Eric Gaustad.

Concordia's Andrew Soto (1-0), who pitched three and two-thirds innings without giving up a run, was awarded the win. Barth (0-1) took the loss.

In the second game, Concordia's Enrique Lechuga (3-0) pitched a complete seven inning shutout on just 83 pitches while allowing only three hits. Lechuga struck out seven batters without allowing a walk. Freshman Timothy Crabbe (1-2) was charged with the loss after pitching five innings in which he gave up five runs, three of which were earned. Crabbe struck out three and walked three.

The Warriors will take a break from conference play on Tuesday and head across town to take on the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara and then host Cal State San Marcos on Friday at Russ Carr Field. First pitch is at two o'clock on both days. On Saturday, Westmont will take to the road for a doubleheader with Azusa Pacific beginning at 11:00 a.m.
