As road trips go, this was the shortest one of the year for Westmont Baseball (1-9). The Warriors paid a visit to Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on the campus of UC Santa Barbara to renew their rivalry with the Gauchos (3-3). But the Warriors could manage only four hits in an 11-2 loss while UCSB connected for 13 hits including four doubles, two triples and a home run.
Westmont used five pitchers in an effort to keep from over using any one man in a non-conference game. Jon White, who started the game, took the loss. White pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on five hits. He allowed three walks and struck out four.
At the plate, junior short stop Anthony Martinez led off the game with a double to left center and then scored on a single to left by junior first baseman Eric Gaustad. The Warriors scored again in the top of the sixth inning after Martinez led off with a single to left center. Freshman left fielder Ryan Haddock singled to left, advancing Martinez to second before junior second baseman Phillip Valle walked to load the bases with no outs.
A balk moved all three runners up one base, pushing Martinez across the plate. Gaustad was then walked and the Warriors had the bases loaded again with one outs. But the Gauchos' Chuck Huggins threw back-to-back strikeouts to freshman Jason Younkers and junior John Evans. Huggins then coaxed freshman centerfielder Luke Montzingo into grounding out before Westmont could do further damage.
The Warriors return to Russ Carr Field for a game with Cal State San Marcos on Friday. The first pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
