Warrior Pitchers Can't Stop Cougars' Bats

The Cougars of Cal State San Marcos (10-14) produced 18 runs on 18 hits as Westmont Baseball (5-19) suffered an 18-4 loss on Tuesday in San Diego. Starter John Evans was charged with the loss after surrendering six runs, four of which were earned on seven hits in two and two-thirds innings of play.

The win was awarded to Ian Thompson who pitched one and one-third innings without allowing a run. The Cougars used eight different pitchers in the game with none taking the mound for more than two innings of work.

The game started well for the Warriors with two runs in the first inning. Junior short stop Anthony Martinez singled up the middle to start the game and took third when junior left fielder Erik Gaustad singled to left center. Martinez scored on a single by freshman right fielder Luke Montzingo and Gaustad scored when sophomore catcher Nate Dreesmann reached on an error.

Westmont scored two more runs in the eighth inning. Senior Andy Dude led off the attack with a double to left center. After Martinez struck out, Gaustad doubled to right center, scoring Dude. Junior Gaustad moved to third on a single to right by Valle and scored when Evans hit a ground ball to second.

The Warriors continue their road trip with a doubleheader against San Diego Christian on Wednesday.
