Hawks Take Two from Warriors

The Warriors held third-inning 4-2 leads in both games of a doubleheader, but left San Diego without a victory on Wednesday. San Diego Christian (14-10, 11-9) posted four run innings in both contests to secure an 8-5 victory in the first game and a 7-4 win in the second.

Westmont (5-21, 3-17) took advantage of a couple of errors to score four runs of their own in the third inning of game one. With one away, junior shortstop Anthony Martinez reached first on an error by the Hawk's right fielder, and then moved to third on a double to left field by junior pitcher Erik Gaustad. Junior second baseman Valle then ripped a two-RBI triple to center field to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

Valle scored when freshman catcher Luke Montzingo sent a ground ball to short which was mishandled by the shortstop. Freshman first baseman Jason Younker moved Montzingo over to second base with a single to right field. Both Younker and Montzingo advanced a base on a wild pitch before junior right field John Evans picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field and the Warriors found themselves up 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, San Diego scored on a two-run home run by center fielder Tyler Perkins and then picked up four more in the bottom of the fourth as the result of three singles, one double one walk and a sacrifice fly. The Hawks' catcher Scott Jarmakowicz added another run in the bottom of the fifth with a home run over the left field fence.

The Warriors scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning which Evans led off with a single up the middle. Junior left fielder Jon White, who was four for seven at the plate on the day, singled to left to give Westmont runners at first and second with nobody out. Evans moved up to third on a pass ball putting him in position to score on a sacrifice fly to right by sophomore center fielder Derek Fugitt.

Gaustad (0-3), who started on the mound for the Warriors, was assigned the loss. He pitched five innings giving up seven runs on nine hits. Gaustad struck out four and allowed five walks. Right-hander Lance Janke (5-2) pitched a complete game in the win

In the second game, the Warriors scored an unearned run courtesy of back-to-back-to-back walks by Valle, Montzingo and Younker and an error by the Hawks' first baseman. The Warriors scored three more unearned runs in the third inning which started off by Gaustad reaching on an error. A double to left center moved Gaustad to second. Both runners scored on a double to center by Evans. Evans then scored on a single up the middle by White.

San Diego Christian, however, scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Hawks' hitters put together a string of four singles. In the fifth inning, third baseman Garrett Lingle tripled with the basses loaded and then scored on a single by left fielder Steve Tripp as the Hawks posted four runs. San Diego Christian added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Freshman starting pitcher Timothy Crabbe (2-3) took the loss for the Warriors. Crabbe allowed six runs on eight hits in four and one-third innings of work. Garrett Russell picked up the win in relief.

Westmont will host #18 Point Loma Nazarene in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch at Russ Carr Field will be at 11:00 a.m.
