Game Recap: Baseball |

Lions Take First of Two from Warriors

The Warriors put up six runs in the fourth inning, but it wasn't enough as Westmont Baseball (1-16, 0-13) lost 15-8 to the Lions of Vanguard in Costa Mesa this afternoon. The Warriors produced 12 hits in the game, all singles, half of which came in the fourth inning.

Jaime Barth (0-4) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs on five hits in two innings of work. Richard Jessup (2-0) was awarded the win after pitching eight innings and giving up seven runs, six of which were earned.

Down 3-0 in the top of the first, Westmont picked up its first run on an RBI single to left field by junior first baseman Erik Gaustad which scored junior short stop Martinez. But Vanguard recorded six runs in the bottom half of the inning and Westmont found itself in a 9-1 hole.

Junior left fielder Jon White led off the top of the fourth for the Warriors with a single to right center then advanced to second on a walk to freshman catcher Luke Montzingo. Right fielder John Evans flew out to left field for the first out with the runners holding at first and second. A base hit to right field by senior third baseman Andy Dude loaded the bases and brought up center fielder Derek Fugitt. Fugitt singled to left center, scoring both White and Montzingo and moving Dude up to second base.

Martinez continued the inning with a single to short to once again fill the bases with Warrior runners. A single by Gaustad scored Dude and moved everyone else up one base. Junior second baseman Philip Valle then drove in two runs and advanced Gaustad to second with Westmont's fifth single in a row, this one to left field.

Designated hitter Jason Younker then reached on an error by the Lions' shortstop which advanced Valle to second and allowed Gaustad to score. By the time the inning was over, Westmont had scored six runs and found itself down by a score of 9-7.

Vanguard added another run in the bottom of the fifth, four more in the bottom of the sixth and another in the bottom of the eighth before Westmont scored again. In the top of the ninth, Valle led off and reached on an error. After sophomore Nate Dressmann flew out to center field, sophomore David Stout pinch hit for White and received a walk to put men at first and second. Montzingo recorded the second out with a fly ball to center, but Evans singled to left to score Valle and move Stout to third base. But that was all the runs the Warriors could muster before the inning and the game came to an end.

The two teams will match up again on Thursday but with the Warriors as the home team. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
