John Moore, head coach for Westmont men's basketball, announced the signing today of 6' 8", 215 pound post player
Bobby Fenske of Carrollton, Texas.
A sophomore transfer from the U.S. Naval Academy, Fenske is expected to help compensate for the sudden departure of Tom Garlepp.
"I think Bobby has the potential to fill the hole Tom left," said Moore. In some ways it's a wash, but Bobby has three years of eligibility so we get an extra year with him. He is a face-up guy who can really shoot the ball and is good on the perimeter. From all accounts he is a phenomenal shooter who can put the ball in the hole. His high school coach called him the best shooter he has ever seen."
Fenske played high school ball for Trinity Christian Academy where 2006 alumni Will and
Luke Allen, played. Recruited and signed by the Air Force out of high school, Fenske found himself suddenly changing plans.
"The Air Force found in his background a report of asthma in the third or fourth grade," said Moore. "He's been checked every year since then and (the original report) turned out to be a false positive. But the Air Force was very stringent. The coaches and administrators were fine, but an Air Force surgeon denied him admission. So he had to scramble at the last minute and found that the Naval Academy was still interested in him."
Fenske played in 26 games for the Midshipmen, averaging 8.5 minutes per contest and starting in ten of the last 12 games. Of his 15 made field goals, ten were from behind the arc where he posted a three-point field goal percentage of .400. Fenske also pulled down 28 boards in his freshman season.
"Air Force runs a Princeton system," noted Moore, "so knowing he was recruited and signed by the Air Force was exciting to me. He is the identical kind of player that we would recruit."
Warrior fans will get their first opportunity to see Fenske and the 2007-08 edition of the Westmont Men's Basketball team on, Thursday, November 1, when the Warriors will host the Afghanistan National Team in an exhibition at Murchison Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
