Five Run Eighth Does In Warriors in Season Opener

Westmont baseball held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning in the Warriors' season opener, but California Lutheran pushed five runs across the plate to claim a 6-3 victory. Jonathan White was charged with the loss in relief. White pitched three and one-third innings, allowing only one hit but giving up three walks, all of which scored. He also struck out three men.

The Kingsmen scored in the bottom of the third inning to post a 1-0 lead. Third baseman Kevin Graham received a lead-off walk from Westmont starter Timothy Crabbe. Catcher Alex Massari, batting in the ninth spot, laid down a sacrifice bunt which moved Massari over to second. Graham scored when second baseman David Iden singled to center field.

Crabbe pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits. He walked three men and struck out one.

Westmont tied the game on an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. Junior left fielder Taylor Grace reached second base on an error by the center fielder Hector Sanchez to lead off the inning. Two outs later, junior second baseman Mark Boujikian singled to right, allowing Grace to score.

The Warriors added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman center fielder Taylor Maddox singled with one away and then stole second base. Grace walked to give the Warriors men at first and second with one out. Freshman third baseman Jordan Bottenfield flied out to left field before senior designated hitter Cody Chapman stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI-single to center.

Chapman's hit chased California Lutheran starter Robbie Selden from the game to be replaced with Byron Minnich, the eventual game winner.

Westmont made it 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning. Grace reached on a two-out double to right center and Bottenfield drove him in with a single up the middle.

The Warriors troubles started in the bottom of the eighth. After White walked three of the first four batters, senior southpaw John Evans was brought in with one away. But right fielder Trevor Davidson delivered a two-RBI single to right center to tie the game at three. Evans was replaced with senior Eric Guastad who gave up an RBI-double to designated hitter Paul Hartmann. Hartmann subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Chris Hertz.

Westmont will be back in action tomorrow as they host California Lutheran in a 2:00 p.m. game at Russ Carr Field.
