Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Earns First Win

Westmont Women's Soccer enjoyed a 3-1 win over Southern Oregon (0-3) on Saturday in Irvine to tally their first win of the 2008 season. The Warriors (1-1-1) controlled the tempo of the game and according to assistant coach Kristi Kiely, "had the run of play" throughout.

"The team showed a lot of patience today," noted Kiely. "We controlled the pace and had possession about 80% of the game. It was a good victory."

The Warriors got on the board first with a goal by sophomore forward Jameisha Washington.

"Jenna Nelson took control of the ball in the central left and passed it to Amy Lawson who was wide left. Amy beat her defender and passed across to the feet of J.J. who finished easily. Jenna and Amy established chemistry today which is what we have been hoping for."

At about the 35 minute mark, Southern Oregon evened the score at a goal apiece and took momentum away from the Warriors going into halftime.

"We just didn't get to the ball in the box," acknowledged Kiely.

But Westmont responded after the intermission to reclaim control of the game.

"Shanae Coker came into the game at right forward and gave us energy that we needed and a connection with both the central midfield and Amy at forward," reported Kiely. "Jenna and Amy connected again on a pass with Amy sending the ball to Shanae on the right side. Shanae had a beautiful strike on the ball which she put in the upper left corner of the net. It was exciting to see her score her first collegiate goal."

Lawson added the third goal, scoring on a jumble in the front of Southern Oregon's goal.

"In the final three minutes, Natalie Johnston had a couple of good saves to preserve the win for us," noted Kiely.

The Warriors return to campus to attend the first week of classes before their next outing on Monday, September 8. That's when Westmont will travel south to take on Cal State Los Angeles.
