Box Score Jackson_3899_web
Senior point guard Chris Jackson scored 18 points, dished off nine assists, and tallied six steals as the Warriors defeated Cal Poly Pomona 60-47 in the Warriors' home opener. The Warriors are now 3-0 on the young season while Cal Poly falls to 0-1. "We have been talking about this game since we saw it on our schedule," said Jackson. "We wanted to get revenge (after last year's loss), especially since they came to our place. We came out focused and ready to play and it showed." Jackson, who did not make a three-pointer all last year and took only five attempts, made two of three from long distance tonight and shot 58.3% from the floor (7 of 12). "I've been working really hard in the off-season (on my shooting)," said Jackson. "I feel more confident shooting the ball and my teammates are getting me the ball when I am open. I'm just trying to help this team win." "CJ's mom has to come to every game," declared Westmont Head Coach John Moore. "She was here tonight and said that we have won every game she's come to. CJ played in his comfy clothes. He was really comfy out there. I thought he played really well against Robert Morris, but he may have played even better tonight."

The Warriors held the Broncos to just 13 first-half points and took a 15-point lead into the locker room (28-13). With the Warriors up 4-2 early in the game, guard Andrew Schmalbach (14 points), went on an 8-0 run, dropping two through the net from downtown and hitting a jumper in the paint. After a jumper by the Broncos' Mitchel Anderson ended Schmalbach's run, Jackson drained a three-pointer to put the Warriors in front 15-4 with 11:49 left in the first half. Cal Poly's Donnelle Booker narrowed the margin by two, but Jackson restored the 11-point lead with a layup. A jumper by the Bronco's Dahir Nasser and a free throw by Austin Swift pulled Cal Poly to within eight (17-9) before Westmont went on a 7-2 run to take a 24-11 advantage with 3:45 before intermission.

The Broncos' Dwayne Fells hit a jumper which was answered with a Jackson layup as the clock registered one minute to play. A Blake Bender layup put the icing on the first-half cake. Bender scored nine points and pulled down six boards. In the second half, the Warriors pressed their advantage and built a 24-point lead when freshman Preston Branson fired off his second three-pointer of the game. That gave the Warriors a 55-31 lead with 8:55 remaining and proved to be too much for the Broncos to overcome.

"Preston played only four minutes but he had a very good four minutes of play," said Moore. The Broncos were led in scoring by Austin Swift who recorded 12 points. Westmont will continue its season next week with a road trip to Salt Lake City to participate in the Westminster Thanksgiving Tournament. On Friday, the Warriors will take on Carroll (Mont.) and then face Westminster on Saturday. [box score]
