Bender Honored as SBART Athlete of the Week

Box Score After scoring 36 points in the Warriors' win over Carroll (Mont.) on Friday, Blake Bender has been named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week. The junior from Anaheim Hills made 15 of 22 attempts from the floor (68.2%), including one from beyond the arc. From the charity stripe, Bender was five of seven.

After Westmont (4-1) fell behind by 14 points midway through the first half, Bender led the Warriors comeback by scoring 17 points in the final 10 minutes of the opening frame. When play resumed after intermission, Bender scored seven points in a Westmont 10-0 run to start the second half and give the Warriors an eight point advantage.

"Blake had a special night," said Westmont Head Coach John Moore. "He was superb out there. On a night when Evan (Haines) and Dan (Rasp) didn't have quite the games they are accustomed to having, Blake came through with flying colors."

The point total was the most scored by a Warrior in nearly 20 years. Noel Matthews scored 36 against Southern California College (now Vanguard University) on January 13, 1990. Matthews, and now Bender, tied John Crew for twelfth place on the single game scoring list.

Crew, who played for the Warriors in the 1950s, achieved 36 points three times and also posted single game totals of 45, 41, 40 and 39. Tine Hardeman still holds the single game record of 46 points which he set against Chapman during the 1954-55 season.

Against Carroll, Bender also tallied seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the game. The following night, Bender scored 12 points and posted five assists in a loss by Westmont to #9 Westminster. That gave him a total of 48 points and eight assists for the week.

Bender and the Warriors return to action on Thursday when they open Golden State Athletic Conference play by hosting #8 Concordia. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
