Right-handed starter Kellen Skersies gave the Warriors seven and one-third innings of work, allowing three runs on seven hits, but Westmont Baseball was shut out 7-0 by #19 The Master's (15-4, 5-2 GSAC) on Wednesday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. Skersies recorded two strikeouts without giving up a walk.
The Warriors (2-15, 1-8 GSAC) managed just four base runners through the first eight innings including a double by third baseman Jordan Bottenfield in the second inning and a single by David Stout in the eighth.
The Master's scored the first runs of the game on a two-run home run to right field by Pete Goeman in the third inning. Three innings later, Goeman led off with his second homer of the day.
The Mustangs added four more runs in the ninth inning. Marcus Bando led off with a home run to left field. Two more runs scored as the result of a double to left by designated hitter Bryan Lucas. Lucas scored on a bases loaded walk given up by reliever Kyle Noe.
Westmont had a chance in the bottom of the ninth to put some runs on the board. Center fielder Taylor Maddox singled to center with one away and then reached second on a pass ball. One out later, catcher Sam Wiley singled through the middle to advance Maddox to third. But a called third strike to designated hitter Colten Christianson ended the game.
Tyler Bersano was awarded the win for The Master's after allowing just two hits in eight innings of work. Bersano struck out four and walked two. Eric Blackwell pitched the ninth inning for the Mustangs.
Westmont returns to action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against San Diego Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
