Westmont Baseball (1-4) split a two-game series with Pomona-Pitzer (1-1), giving the Warriors their first win of the 2009 campaign. On Tuesday, the Sage Hens scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a 5-4 win. Then on Wednesday, Westmont scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to pick up the 6-5 victory.
Kellen Skersies started for the Warriors, pitching six and one-third innings while giving up four runs on six hits. Timothy Crabbe was assigned the loss after pitching two innings in relief. Crabbe gave up one run on one hit, struck out two and walked three.
Down 2-4, Westmont picked up two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game. Terrell Wong doubled to center field with one away and then scored when Tyler Maddox tripled down the right field line. Maddox scored when Todd Morris grounded out to second base.
The Sage Hens made use of a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to claim the victory, handing the Warriors their fourth loss of the season. Devin Matthews was assigned the win for Pomona-Pitzer after holding the Warriors hitless in one and one-third innings of work.
In Wednesday's game, Tom Church held the Warriors scoreless through six innings of play before surrendering four runs in the seventh inning. Mike Zettl doubled to center field to start off the inning and then was joined on the base pads by Pete McCarthy after he was hit by a pitch. David Stout grounded to third base where Zettl was retired unassisted. Stout reached first on a fielder's choice and McCarthy advanced to second.
With one out, Taylor Grace stepped to the plate and crushed a two-RBI double to left field. Grace advanced to third base when Brent Meschuk flew out to center then scored on a single to right by Maddox.
After Jaden Slagle replaced Church on the mound for the Sage Hens, Maddox advanced to second on a wild pitch. Todd Morris then singled to left, moving Maddox to third. Mark Boujikian connected for a single to right field, driving in Maddox for the fourth run of the inning.
The Warriors still trailed the Sage Hens by one run but would take the lead in the ninth inning. With two outs, Maddox singled to centerfield and advanced to second when Morris was hit by a pitch. Boujikian knocked in the tying run on a single to left as Morris advanced to third. Mark Magdaleno provided the winning-RBI single with a shot to left field.
Drew Dowl came on as the closer in the bottom of the ninth. After giving up a one-out single to Michael Nino, Dowl coaxed Brandon Huerta into a game-ending double play. Dan Price was awarded the win after pitching one and one-third innings in relief. Dowl picked up a save.
