Westmont Baseball jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Eagles of Biola (26-18, 17-11 GSAC) ended up with a 14-10 win at Russ Carr Field in a Golden State Athletic Conference game on Wednesday afternoon at Russ Carr Field.
Strong winds caused a power outage that knocked out both the scoreboard and the public address system in the top of the fifth inning. But those same winds fueled a power display on the diamond with the two teams combining for eight home runs. All but one of the home runs was helped on its way by 30 mile an hour winds blowing out to left field.
Westmont's five-run first inning came on four hits, capped by a two-RBI double to left-center by Terrell Wong. The right fielder went four for five at the plate for the Warriors.
Westmont starting pitcher Kellen Skersies retired the first seven batters he faced before giving up a solo home run to Chad Pace, the first of two he put over the fence in left-center field. Biola scored two more in the fourth on a two-run bomb to right field by Brent Opdyke. In the top of the fifth, Biola struck again, scoring four runs to take a 7-5 lead.
Westmont's Sam Wiley led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run. Wiley was two for three at the plate and was the beneficiary of three walks. After Colten Christianson singled up the middle, Mark Boujikian put the Warriors ahead 8-7 with a two-run home run. Christianson had a three-for-four day at the plate, driving in one run and scoring twice.
But the Eagles scored three times in the top of the sixth and once in the top of the seventh to regain the lead. Biola also added three more runs in the top of the ninth.
Drew Dowl took the loss for the Warriors after giving up three runs on one hit and four walks in one inning of work. Charlie Gauasepohl was awarded the win and Billy Vopinek earned a save for Biola.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday at Russ Carr Field. First pitch is scheduled for three o'clock.
