Senior forward Doug Harrell scored twice, including the game winner, to give Westmont men's soccer a 3-1 Golden State Athletic Conference road victory over Point Loma Nazarene (5-8, 2-5 GSAC) on Saturday afternoon. The win gives Westmont at 7-3-3 record overall and a 2-3-1 mark in conference play.
Harrell's first goal came in the seventh minute of play when he headed in a corner kick from Nana Akyen.
Point Loma Nazarene evened the score at one in the seventh minute of the second half when Griffin Fuller beat his defender and passed the ball to Tyler Hall who completed the play for the score.
In the sixty-fourth minute, Harrell struck again. This time, Westmont's Gustavo Hernandez directed a free kick toward Harrell in the box. Harrell's goal, his sixth of the season, resulted in a 2-1 lead for the Warriors.
Akyen put the game out of reach in the eighty-second minute. The freshman stole the ball from a defender at midfield and dribbled toward the goal, scoring at point blank range.
With four games left in the regular season, the Warriors find themselves in seventh place in the conference standings with seven points (three points for a win, one for a tie). Fifth-ranked California Baptist (12-2, 6-1 GSAC) sits atop the conference after defeating #15 Azusa Pacific (11-3, 5-2) by a score of 2-1.
Azusa Pacific, with 15 points, is in a three-way tie with Fresno Pacific (8-5, 5-1 GSAC) and Vanguard (6-7, 5-1 GSAC). Fresno Pacific defeated San Diego Christian (1-10-1, 0-6 GSAC) today by a score of 2-0 while Vanguard earned a 1-0 victory over The Master's (6-5-2, 3-4 GSAC). The Master's and Biola (5-7-1, 3-3 GSAC) are tied for fifth place with nine points in the standings. Biola defeated Concordia (6-6-1, 1-4-1) this evening by a 2-0 count. Hope International and Point Loma are one point behind the Warriors in the GSAC standings and are tied for eighth.
The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Azusa Pacific at Thorrington field beginning at three o'clock.
