Men's Soccer Secures Playoff Spot Despite Loss

It isn't the way you want to end the regular season. Westmont Men's Soccer (8-4-5, 3-4-3 GSAC) suffered a 4-0 loss to #18 Vanguard at Thorrington Field on Saturday afternoon. By halftime, however, the Warriors had learned that had secured a spot in next week's Golden State Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament due to a 5-1 victory by Fresno Pacific over Point Loma Nazarene.

As a result of today's win, Vanguard (10-7, 9-1) earned the GSAC regular season championship and will be the top-seed in the tournament. The Lions will host Concordia (8-7-2, 3-5-2). Vanguard's only loss on the field this season came to #8 California Baptist. Six of their losses were a result of forfeits.

California Baptist could have shared the conference title with Vanguard, but the Lancers suffered a 2-1 loss to Concordia. As a result, the Lancers, coached by Westmont alum Ryan Jorden, will be the number two seed and will host the Warriors in first round action on Wednesday at two o'clock.

Westmont and California Baptist squared off in the first game off the GSAC schedule back on September 25 and the Lancers edged out the Warriors 2-1.

In other first round games, third-seeded Azusa Pacific (14-3-1, 7-2-1) will host the number six seed, Hope International (9-8-1, 4-5-1), while Fresno Pacific (9-8, 6-4), the number four seed, will host fifth-seeded Biola 7-9-1, 5-5).

Semifinal action is schedule for Saturday, November 6.
