After two scoreless ties on Thorrington Field, Westmont women's soccer (4-3-2, 1-2 GSAC) finally christened the new field with a trio of goals in a 3-0 Golden State Athletic Conference win over San Diego Christian (4-4-2, 0-2-1 GSAC). The Warriors remain undefeated at home and have not given up a goal on their home pitch.
"It was great to get the win that we did today," said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. "I am very pleased with the team. We got quite a few people into the game and they kept up the pressure and the energy."
The Warriors' first goal came in the thirty-second minute when senior midfielder Candcace Marques headed in the second goal of her collegiate career. Marques recently moved to a center-midfield position after playing most of her time at Westmont as a defender.
"I love that Candace was able to get a goal," said Kiely. "She has been having a great season so far in that center-mid spot. I think we might have found a home for her."
Marques' goal came off a cross from freshman Amanda Diesen from 40 yards out on the right side of the field. The ball bounced once in front of the goal before Marques headed it in.
"I was very pleased with Amanda's performance all the way around," said Kiely.
The Warrior's second goal was scored in the fortieth minute after Samantha Kleen freed herself from two defenders and lofted a ball from the top of the box over the keepers' head. Kleen had entered the game less than four minutes earlier.
"Samantha, who hasn't seen a ton of minutes in a while, was able to come in and have a very well executed goal," said Kiely. "She was able to get herself turned and then shook the keeper very nicely."
"It was great to score two goals and have that (lead) headed into the second half," said Kiely, "My words to them at halftime were to continue to go at them and drive at them. Ashley Correa had a great second half. Her work rate was much improved. She would like to have finished two chances, but I love that she is getting the chances. I also love that she is letting others have those chances, which is what she did with Haley."
Sophomore midfielder Haley Yurtin scored in the eighty-fourth minute of play. Jameisha Washington played the ball from top of box on the left side to Ashley Correa who was in front of the goal. Correa fed the ball back to Yurtin who fired from 21 yards out, sneaking the ball past the keeper at the near post.
The Warriors will play two games on the road next week. On Wednesday they play a seven o'clock game at Biola and on Saturday travel to Irvine to play Concordia at noon.
