In a match-up of schools with the same nickname, Westmont Men's Soccer (2-0) defeated William Jessup (0-2) by a score of 3-1 this afternoon on the final day of the Azusa Pacific Cougar Classic. Westmont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute of play on an own goal.
"It originated with a Doug Harrell cross but was put into the net by one of their guys," said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. "While it is always nice to get an early goal, it was just kind of odd."
Less than two minutes later, Westmont doubled its lead on a goal by freshman Peter Schmetz.
"Dan Sargent got to a ball in the box and headed it in Peter's direction," reported Wolf. "Peter scored on a bicycle kick that he looped up over the goalkeeper and into the far post. To see Peter launch himself into the air with his big lanky frame showed a good bit of athleticism. It was a spectacular goal."
"At that point, we were pressing for the third goal because we thought with a third goal we could have done some different things with the rotation of our players," said Wolf. "The guys did a real nice job in the first half with some nice passing sequences. We kept the ball well and got forward very well. We couldn't quite find that third goal, but I was pleased with the sharpness that we had even after the second goal."
Westmont found the third goal in the second half, scoring in the sixtieth minute.
"It came off a corner kick that Scott Williams took," said Wolf. "It was similar to the goal that Rick (McCarthy) scored on Thursday. The ball somehow found its way through the box and bounced at the far post. Anthony Strunz was the quickest to react. It was not a ball that should not have gone through the box the way it did, but he pounced on it and finished it off. That effectively ended the game."
William Jessup got on the scoreboard in the sixty-third minute when Jose Ramirez chipped the ball over Westmont goalkeeper Sean Linn.
"It would have been nice to finish 3-0," said Wolf, "but we gave up a sloppy goal, and that left a little bit of a bad taste in our mouths. Maybe that will help keep us sharp in training this week."
Westmont received some good news regarding McCarthy who left Thursday's game with an injury.
"It turns out that the problem Rick had was more of a hamstring problem than a knee problem," said Wolf. "He was actually available to play today. We chose not to play him because he didn't feel 100 percent confident. Because of the way the game went, there was no need to take that risk again. We are anticipating having him back in training on Tuesday and hopefully available for the weekend."
Westmont will host the Eleventh Heritage Club Classic on Friday and Saturday at Thorrington Field. At 1:30 on Friday, Azusa Pacific will take on Holy Names with Westmont and La Verne taking the pitch at four o'clock. Then on Saturday, Azusa Pacific will play La Verne at 1:30 and Westmont will host Holy Names at four.
