Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors Climb over Rocky Mountain

Westmont Men's Soccer posted a 3-0 win over Rocky Mountain (4-3) of Montana in Prescott, Arizona on Saturday night. The Warriors improved to 5-0-2 with the win.

"It was a good trip for us," acknowledge head coach Dave Wolf regarding his team's trip to the Grand Canyon State. "We didn't concede any goals, which is always good in this sport. It was a hard day, today. We were beat up physically after last night and to turn around inside of 24 hours and play more in the heat of the day. That was a big challenge for the team, but they were able to get it done."

Westmont's first goal came in the forty-first minute of play and marked the inaugural goal of freshman Nana Akyen's collegiate career.

"It came off a very neat combination between Anthony Strunz, Isaac Thompkins and Dan Sargent. They played a quick, triangle combination. Then Sarge delivered the ball to Nana and he tucked it away."

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Rocky Mountain received a red card and was forced to play the rest of the game down a man.

"The red card was the result of a pretty bad tackle from behind on Nana," said Wolf. "He survived it, but it was a dicey tackle. I think some frustration had started to set in with them."

In the seventy-first minute, the Warriors added to the Rocky Mountain woes.

"The second goal was off a corner that was a bit fortunate to be honest," said Wolf. "Harrison Hill delivered the corner and Anthony Niboli tried to head it. He miss-headed it and the ball hit the (defender) in the foot and it came right back to Tony. He then stuffed in the second crack at it."

In the eighty-seventh minute, the Warriors took advantage of Rocky Mountains' reduced lineup to add the third goal.

"Rocky Mountain was pressing a bit and the game opened up at the end," said Wolf. "Gustavo Hernandez played a ball forward to Ben Gordon who slotted it forward to Isaac Thompkins. Isaac finished it with one touch. It was a great weekend for Benny, playing at home in Arizona."

The Warriors complete the non-conference schedule with an undefeated record of 5-0-2 and now turn their attention toward Golden State Athletic Conference play. Westmont has given up just four goals in its seven games and no more than one in a game.

"I wouldn't be honest if I didn't tell you that this is a bit of surprise for us out of the gate," said Wolf of the team's success. "The team has found some identity during this first third of the season. We continue to be stingy, defensively. It has given us a platform for adding different pieces to our game and we feel like we are doing that. The league is definitely the next step up in terms of competition. We will have to be geared up for what that will bring, but overall, it has been a great start to the year for us."

Westmont will open GSAC play in Riverside next Saturday, taking on the Lancers of #11 California Baptist at 3:30 in the afternoon. California Baptist is coached by Westmont alumnus and former assistant coach Ryan Jorden.
