Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Martinez Strikes Again as Warriors Defeat Hawks

After scoring both of the Warriors' goals on Thursday in Westmont Women's Soccer's 2-0 win over William Jessup, freshman forward Jenny Martinez scored the lone goal in the Warriors' 1-0 win over the Hawks of Holy Names (1-2-2) on Saturday. The goal came just before the end of the first half.

"Ashley (Correa) played out to Brit Scannell who crossed from about 30 yards out and Jenny headed it in," reported Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. "It was probably one of the best goals we've scored all year. The keeper came out and Jenny threw her body out there and headed it over her. She got taken out in the process, but she got a goal.

"Jenny Martinez had been a threat all weekend," continued the coach. "She and Brit continue to find connection up top and if we can keep that going, I think we will have a lot of success."

Scannell was credited with the assist as she was on the second goal of Thursday's game.

"Brit Scannell had a fantastic game defensively for us," said Kiely. "We played her in the back today because we heard that Holy Names was pretty quick. She was still able to be involved in the attack."

The move proved to be particularly important when Westmont lost a key defensive player early in the game.

"About five minutes into the game Kayla Barkett went into a tackle and may have torn her ACL," said Kiely.

The senior, who has been a mainstay of the Warriors' defensive lineup, will be examined on Monday to determine the extent of her injuries.

"Amanda Diesen came in and stepped it up for us," said Kiely. "She was able to hold her own in the back."

"Roxanne (Love) had her third shutout of the year, which is almost as many as we had all of last year," noted the coach. "She is getting the job done back there and we are happy for her."

Westmont concluded non-conference play with a 3-2-2 record. Next Saturday, the Warriors begin the Golden State Athletic Conference schedule by traveling to Riverside for a match up with #6 California Baptist (6-1). The Lancers are coached by Westmont alumna Kristen St. Clair. The game is set to kick off at 1:00 p.m.
