Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors, Leopards Can't Get Past One Spot

Westmont's Doug Harrell gave the Warriors a 1-0 advantage in the forty-ninth minute of play, but Westmont Men's Soccer (2-0-1) gave back the goal just 81 seconds later. That was all the scoring that would happen despite two overtime periods as the Warriors and the Leopards of La Verne (0-0-1) tied 1-1 in the second game of the Eleventh Heritage Club Classic.

Westmont head coach Dave Wolf was hoping for a different result.

"I think what I am most disappointed about is that we just didn't win our first game on Thorrington Field," said Wolf. "What I have to be careful about is letting that disappointment cloud my proper evaluation of the game.

"They were a hard team to break down and I thought they played solid defense against us," added Wolf. "I thought we did a pretty decent job of getting to the 'moment of truth' a lot, but once we got there, we couldn't come up with the right recipe to get through."

Harrell's goal, which was made from ten yards out on the left-hand side, was scored on one of five shots he took in the game. Four of his five shots were on goal.

The crowd of 422 celebrated Harrell's goal, but were quickly silenced when the Leopard's Mike Mancilla dribbled through the defense and drilled an open shot to the left corner.

"Disappointment number two was conceding (the tying goal) so quickly," said Wolf. "In any soccer game, there are moments of vulnerability. Certainly one of those is right after you score a goal."

Despite the loss, Wolf was pleased with the environment in which the games were played.

"It was incredible to see a good crowd and get a feel for what that was like," said Wolf. "Every new experience I have at that facility excites me even more. It was about half capacity today, and you could really imagine what it would be like if it was full and spilling over."

In the first game of the Heritage Club Classic, Azusa Pacific (3-0) posted a 6-1 win over the Hawks of Holy Names (0-1). Vinicius Dantas scored twice for the Cougars while Brett Taylor and Oktay Bulut each added a goal and an assist. The other Azusa Pacific goals were scored by Trenton Titus and Henry Ortlip. Holy Names' lone goal was scored as the result of a penalty kick.

The Heritage Club Classic continues tomorrow with Azusa Pacific hosting La Verne at 1:30 and the Warriors taking on Holy Names at 4:00 p.m.
