Late Goal Lifts Hawks over Warriors

Westmont Men's Soccer suffered a disappointing Golden State Athletic Conference loss on Saturday at Thorrington Field, falling to San Diego Christian (3-8-1, 1-4 GSAC) by a score of 2-1. With the loss, Westmont falls to 2-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.

Westmont outshot the Hawks 7-1 in the scoreless first half and held a 9-8 shooting advantage in the second half. The Warriors also held an 8-2 advantage for shots on goal for the game. However, San Diego Christian made both of their shots on goal count.

Westmont's goal came in the fifty-sixth minute. Doug Harrell took a shot from the left side of the field which rebounded off the keeper and angled to the right side of the field. George Zach fired off a shot on the rebounded ball into the far side of the net.

Just a minute and one-half later, however, the Hawk's Brent Oglesby scored a goal off another rebounded ball, tying the game at one-all.

The game winner came in the eighty-fourth minute. Victor Florez dribbled down the center of the field, beat his defender and scored from 11 yards out.

The loss is the first ever to San Diego Christian, with Westmont winning the first 14 meetings.

In other Golden State Athletic Conference action, #9 Concordia (10-2, 4-1) was upset 1-0 by Hope International (4-6-1, 1-4) in Fullerton. The Master's (9-1-3, 2-1-1) defeated Point Loma Nazarene (7-5-1, 1-4) by a score of 4-0. #23 Vanguard (10-4, 4-1) earned a 1-0 road win over Fresno Pacific (8-4, 4-1) and #12 Azusa Pacific (9-2-1, 3-1-1) need an overtime period to defeat #21 Biola (7-4-2, 2-3) by a 2-1 count.

Concordia, Vanguard and Fresno Pacific are currently tied for first in the GSAC standings with 12 points (three points for a win, one for a tie). Azusa Pacific occupies fourth place with 10 points while The Master's is in fifth with eight points. Biola claims sixth place with six points and Westmont sits in seventh place with four points. Just one point back in a three-way tie for eighth place is Point Loma Nazarene, Hope International and San Diego Christian.

Next up for the Warriors is a home game against Biola on Wednesday, October 19 at three o'clock.
