Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early PK Gives Eagles Upset over Warriors

A penalty kick in the eleventh minute is all that it took for the Eagles of Biola (8-5, 5-1 GSAC) to upset #12 Westmont Women's Soccer (9-4, 4-2) on Tuesday at Thorrington Field. Biola's Sarina Coutin shot the ball to her right, just past the outstretched arms of Westmont keeper Lindsey Smith.

The penalty kick, the first taken by a Westmont opponent all year, was award by head referee Daniel Radford due to a pulled jersey in the box.

"(Biola) got a goal early on a pretty tick-tack PK and then they sit in (defensively)," said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. "It is very hard to penetrate that (defense) and we had trouble with it. I think we beat ourselves quite a bit today. Our inexperienced showed. But you move on, you work on it and you get ready for the next game."

The Warriors had a chance to even the score in the seventy-second minute when they were awarded their first penalty kick of the year after some shoving by the Eagles in front of the goal. Ashley Correa, who recorded a hat trick in Saturday's game against San Diego Christian, sent the shot right. However, Biola's keeper, Erin Frushon was able to get a glove on it and send it back into the field of play to the right of the goal.

"I thought Tiffany Dimaculangan had a great game," said Kiely of her freshman midfielder, "Other than that, I thought we played more like individuals than like a team."

Westmont outshot Biola 14-9, including a 4-2 advantage of shots on goal.

In other Golden State Athletic Conference games today, #5 Azusa Pacific (8-2-1, 4-2) need an overtime period in Costa Mesa to post a 1-0 victory over Vanguard (10-3-1, 2-3-1). In Santa Clarita, #24 The Master's (9-6, 3-3) earned a 4-0 home victory over Fresno Pacific (5-6, 1-5) while in El Cajon, San Diego Christian (5-8, 1-5) handed Hope International (4-9, 0-6) a 4-2 loss.

Fourth-ranked Point Loma Nazarene (13-0-1, 5-0) and #14 Concordia (11-2-1, 3-1-1) will play tomorrow.

With three games remaining in conference play, Westmont has 12 points (three for a win, one for a loss) in the GSAC standings and is currently tied for third place in the GSAC standings with Azusa Pacific. Biola and Point Loma Nazarene each have 15 points and are tied for first place; however, Point Loma has played one less game. Concordia, which has also completed one less game, is in fifth place with 10 points.
