Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sunbirds Score Late Goal to Beat Warriors

Westmont men's soccer (3-10-1, 2-5-1 GSAC) travelled north to take on the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific (10-5, 6-2) in a Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday. The two teams played scoreless soccer until the seventy-ninth minute when Fresno Pacific's Julian Mattaliano scored the game's only goal, giving the Sunbirds a 1-0 victory.

Westmont goalkeeper Andrew Singer tallied six saves to keep the Warriors in the game.

Mattaliano's goal was the result of a serve by Paul Islas from the right side of the field. Mattaliano finished the play from point-blank range.

With one game remaining in the regular season, the Warriors are currently in seventh place in the GSAC standings. Westmont has accumulated seven points (three for a win, one for a tie) and is one point ahead of eighth place Hope International (5-7-1, 2-5). Lurking in ninth place is Point Loma Nazarene (7-7-1, 1-6) which has three points in the standings.

The catch is that Hope International and Point Loma each have two games remaining. Tomorrow, the two teams will play each other. Then on Saturday, Hope International will take on Azusa Pacific while Westmont hosts Point Loma.

If Hope International wins tomorrow, the Royals will move into seventh place in the GSAC standings, bumping the Warriors into eighth. However, Westmont will then be assured of a place in the Tournament because Point Loma will be unable to overtake the Warriors for eighth place.

If the Royals should then go on to upset #11 Azusa Pacific (11-2-2, 5-1-2), they would at least retain the number seven seed. However, if the Royals lose to Azusa Pacific and Westmont defeats Point Loma, the Warriors would move back into seventh place.

If, however, Point Loma wins tomorrow's game against Hope International, the Sea Lions would then be tied with Hope International for eighth place with Westmont in seventh. The winner between Westmont and Point Loma on Saturday would then clinch a spot in the GSAC Tournament. If Hope International was to defeat Azusa Pacific on Saturday, and Point Loma defeated Westmont, the Warriors would finish ninth and be left out of GSAC postseason play.

No matter what the scenario remaining after Wednesday's Point Loma-Hope International game, the Warriors and Sea Lions will kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Thorrington Field.
