Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warriors Advance with Win over Concordia

Westmont started play in the Golden State Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament with a bang. Hosting a first round game in the postseason tournament, the Warriors, ranked #13, recorded a 4-0 victory over #17 Concordia.

Westmont, the fourth seed in the tournament, will advance to face top-seeded Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday in San Diego. The Warriors and Sea Lions faced off just last Saturday, with Westmont handing Point Loma its first loss of the season 2-0.

Lindsey Smith earned her fifth shutout of the season against Concordia and the second in a row. Yesterday, Smith was named the GSAC Defensive Player of the Week and today was honored as the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week. Smith notched three saves against Concordia, bringing her season total to 60.

Westmont's first goal came in the twenty-seventh minute of play when Ashley Correa took a corner kick for the Warriors. The junior forward, who was yesterday named the GSAC Offensive Player of the Week, launched a bending ball into the goal to give the Warriors the early advantage.

Five and one-half minutes into halftime, Westmont made it 2-0. Freshman forward Mallory Mitchell dribbled toward the goal then passed the ball to the right corner where Aolani Rueff was waiting. Rueff drove the ball over the keeper's head and into the net with what first appeared to be a cross.

In the sixty-sixth minute, another corner kick resulted in a 3-0 Warrior lead. This time Correa sent the ball to the far post where Mitchell headed it back in toward the goal. Senior Melanie Greene then headed the ball past the keeper for her first goal of the year.

The icing on the cake came in the eighty-sixth minute when Rueff was driving to the goal after beating her defender. Rueff was taken down from behind and a penalty kick was awarded. Rueff took the kick, but bounced it off the left post. Following her own PK, Rueff fired again from point-blank range for her second goal of the day and her seventh of the season.
