Mexico Sends Warriors to Alabama

It took 108 minutes for the Warriors to find the back of the net, but that was all that was need to advance Westmont to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. Freshman Kaci Mexico headed in a corner from Ashley Correa as #14 Westmont defeated #13 Cal State San Marcos 1-0 in double overtime.

The Warriors will meet Point Loma Nazarene in the second round, which will take place in Decatur, Alabama on Tuesday, November 29.

The goal scored by Mexico was only the sixth allowed all season by the Cougars (15-4-1) who outscored their opponents 40-6 this season. Westmont goalkeeper Lindsey Smith picked up her sixth shutout of the season. Smith had three saves in the game.

The Warriors have already played Point Loma twice this season. On October 29, the two squads met for the first time in the final game of the regular season at Thorrington field on the Westmont campus. The Warriors shutout the Sea Lions 2-0 handing Point Loma its first loss of the season. Correa and Aolani Rueff scored goals in that contest.

Six days later on November 4, the Warriors traveled to Point Loma for a semifinal game in the Golden State Athletic Conference playoffs. After a scoreless tie in regulation, including the final 15 minutes played in a howling storm, the game advanced to overtime. There was no let up from the wind and side-ways rain in the extra period, but Point Loma's Gina Shulte managed to head the ball into the net to give the Sea Lions the win.

Now, the Warriors and Sea Lions will face off exactly one-month from their first meeting to play the rubber game of their three-game series. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals. The loser's season will come to an end.
