Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors Fall in First Round

The season came to an end in Fresno for Westmont Men's Soccer (3-12-1) as the Warriors lost to Fresno Pacific (12-5) by a score of 2-1 in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Warriors, who were seated eighth in the tournament, posted a 1-0 lead over the top-seeded Sunbirds in the twenty-second minute. Senior Zach George threw in the ball near Fresno Pacific's goal. The ball deflected off of a Sunbird defender and found the feet of Westmont's Nana Akyen. The sophomore midfielder put the ball in the net to spot the Warriors to a 1-0 lead.

Westmont held the lead through the balance of the first half, despite an offensive display by the Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds tallied 15 shots (four on goal) in the first half and 17 (six on goal) in the second. Westmont managed just four first half shots (one on goal) and three in the second half (two on goal).

Fresno Pacific also posted a substantial corner kick advantage (14-2) with eight corners coming in the first half.

Despite the impressive offensive numbers, the Sunbirds did not find the equalizer until the sixtieth minute. On a free kick from the left-hand side, Paul Islas sent the ball to the front of the Warrior goal. The ball bounced off of the body of Luke Tyler and deflected into the goal.

The Sunbirds did not score the winning goal until the final minute of play. Chris Young played a ball in from midfield and Islas went up in the air, heading the ball above the reach of Westmont keeper Andrew Singer.

Fresno Pacific will advance to the GSAC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, taking on the winner of tonight's game between Biola and Vanguard.
