Lancers Complete Sweep

Third-ranked California Baptist (21-2, 8-0 GSAC) took both ends of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader from Westmont Baseball (9-10, 2-6) on Saturday at Russ Carr Field. The Lancers won the first game 14-3 and then took the second 10-2, completing a four-game sweep.

In the first game, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to their number eight and nine hitters. With runners at first and second and two away, left-fielder Brandon Allen singled through the left side to drive in Jordan Bottenfield from second base. Then catcher Brandon Gildea stepped to the plate and singled through the right side, driving in Colten Christianson from third and Allen who was on second.

The Warrior lead would be short lived, however as the Lancers scored four in the fourth and went on to score at least one run in every subsequent inning.

Starter Michael Kwan took the loss for Westmont. He pitched three and one-third innings, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits. Kwan walked four and did not have a strikeout. California Baptist's Erik Wallace was credited with the win. He gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out nine and walked two.

In the second game, California Baptist posted runs on the scoreboard first with two in the second inning. Westmont's Colten Christianson hit a solo-homer in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lancers scored two more runs in the top of the third.

California Baptist would add three more in the fifth and another three in the seventh while the Warriors could only manage one more run, that coming in the bottom of the fifth. Westmont's run came as the result of an RBI-single by catcher Jarrett Rouse on which Christianson scored from third.

Tim Leary was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in two and one-third innings of worked. Leary walked four and struck out two. Devyn Riviera pitched a complete seven-inning game for the Lancers, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out six and did not surrender a walk.

Next week, the Warriors will play a four-game series with Biola. On Wednesday and Thursday, Westmont will travel to La Mirada for the two o'clock games. Then on Saturday, Biola will make its way to Russ Carr Field on the Montecito campus for an eleven o'clock doubleheader.
