Game Recap: Baseball |

Warriors Take Two from Hawks

Designated hitter Tim Leary's bases-loaded, two-RBI double in the top of the tenth inning proved to be the difference in Westmont Baseball's 11-9 win over San Diego Christian (6-35, 4-27 GSAC) in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Warriors (17-27, 9-22) also won the second game, prevailing 6-4 in the seven-inning nightcap.

With the dual wins, Westmont has achieved its highest win total since the 2000 season when the Warriors were 26-20.

Dan Cabuling started the first game for the Warriors and pitched six inning, giving up four runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out five. When he left the game at the end of the sixth, Cabuling and the Warriors were leading 6-4.

Leary had an outstanding day at the plate, going six for seven with a home run and a double in each game. The 6-8 slugger scored five times and drove in eight runs.

In the top of the second inning of game one, Leary produced a lead-off single through the left side, and then advanced to third on a double to left-center by Colten Christianson. Leary scored and Christianson moved to second when Mitch Petrak reached on an error by the Hawks' right fielder. Christianson scored when Brandon Allen hit a ground ball to second. Allen also had a remarkable day, going six for nine with two RBIs and two triples.

Coby Cress led off the fourth inning with a single through the left side and reached second when Leary did the same. One out later, Cress scored when Petrak reached on a fielder's choice that retired Leary at second. With men on the corners, Allen knocked a two-RBI triple into center field. Allen then scored on an infield single by Jarrett Rouse.

Westmont made it a 6-0 game after Leary was hit by a pitch to start the top of the sixth inning. Leary scored on a double to left field by Petrak.

The Hawks struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Warriors added two more in the top of the seventh when Leary pounded a two-run home run over the center field wall.

Ryan Sullivan pitched the seventh inning for the Warriors, allowing one run on one hit. Jacob Regalado pitched a scoreless eighth, permitting one hit before retiring the next three batters in order.

In the top of the ninth, Westmont added one run to make it a 9-5 lead when Allen singled up the middle with the bases loaded to score Cress from third.

However, the wheels fell of the Warriors' bus in the bottom of the ninth inning. Closer Pete McCarthy came into pitch for the Warriors and struggled with control. McCarthy walked the first two batters before enticing Trevor Bloom to fly out to right field. However, McCarthy then walked Victor Martinez to load the bases.

With one out, Brian Charnock singled through the left side to drive in two runs and make it a 9-7 game. A single by Gus Hernandez drove in Martinez to pull the Hawks to within one. One out later, Dominic Neocoechea singled again to drive in Charmock and send the game into extra innings.

The Warriors wasted no time in recapturing the lead, scoring twice in the top of the tenth. Steven Motush led off the innings with a bunt single, and then moved to second when Jordan Bottenfield walked. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by J.J. Turbin. The Hawks decided to intentionally walk Coby Cress to set up the potential double play. However, the strategy backfired when Leary launched a double to right field, driving in both Motush and Bottenfield.

Mitch Crocker retired the side in order in the bottom of the tenth to pick-up his second save of the year. McCarthy (1-0) was awarded the win.

Starter Chris Plance (4-3) pitched five and two-third innings to pick up the win in the second game.

In the second game, the Warriors picked up where they had left off.

Bottenfield singled to center to lead off the first, reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Turbin and advanced to third when Cress flied out to center field. Leary then doubled to left-center to drive in Bottenfield. Christianson followed with a double to right field which drove in Leary to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Christianson tried to stretch the double into a triple, but was thrown out at third base.

Westmont added another run in the top of the second when Allen tripled to center field, driving in Petrak who had earlier been walked.

However, the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the second and added two more to take a 4-3 lead – a lead that they held until the top of the fifth inning. With one away in the top of the fifth, Cress singled to center and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Leary then homered for the second time of the day, this time to right center. Leary leads the Warriors with eight home runs on the season.

With runners on the corners and two away in the bottom of the sixth, Regalado took over on the hill for Plance; making his second appearance of the day. Regalado struck out Ryan Inverso to end the Hawks' threat and send the game to the final inning

The Warriors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Cress doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. Leary drove Cress in with a sacrifice fly to right.

In the bottom of the seventh, Regalado retired the side in order to pick up his fifth save of the year.

The Warriors will finish up the 2011 season next week with five games. On Wednesday and Thursday, the Warriors will host the Cougars of Azusa Pacific (24-20, 16-16) at three o'clock each day. Then on Friday, Westmont will host San Diego Christian, also at three o'clock. Friday's game will also serve as Senior Day. The Warriors will conclude the season with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday at Azusa Pacific.
