Baseball Splits DH with CSU Monterey Bay

Westmont Baseball (1-2-1) finished up its trip to Monterey with a split of a twin bill on Saturday. In the first game, Westmont prevailed 6-4 over the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay (2-1) but fell in the second game by a score of 16-4.

Mitch Crocker picked up the win for the Warriors in the early game after pitching four innings in relief. Crocker allowed one unearned run on two hits, struck out two and walked two. Torin Shaikh started the game and pitched four innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits. Shaikh walked one and struck out one.

At the plate, right fielder Coby Cress went two for four with two RBI's and a run scored while designated hitter Tim Leary was two for four with a double and one RBI.

The Warriors broke a two-two tie by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Two runs scored on a bases-loaded double by second baseman David Pennington. Cress drove in two more with a single through the left side.

The Warrior pitching struggled in the second game. Leary, who started on the mound, was charged with the loss. He faced seven batters and gave up six runs (three earned) in just one-third inning of work. Devin Matson was a bright spot in the Warriors' pitching staff. Matson surrendered a solo home run in the fifth but retired the next six batters he faced.

At the plate, Leary was two for two, driving in three runs and scoring once. William Barring was two for three with a run scored.

The Warriors return to the Bay Area next weekend to participate in a tournament at Menlo. On Friday, Westmont takes on Menlo at 2:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, Westmont will face Cal State East Bay in a game to be held at Menlo-Atherton High School beginning at eleven o'clock. At 2:30 p.m., the Warriors return to Menlo College to take on Azusa Pacific in a non-conference game. Then on Sunday, Westmont will play another game against Cal State East Bay, this time in Hayward.
