Hawks Rally in Eighth to Beat Warriors

Westmont Baseball (13-14-1, 6-9 GSAC) rallied from a 5-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Warriors couldn't hold on and fell 9-6 in a Golden State Athletic Conference game on Friday afternoon to the Hawks of San Diego Christian (11-17, 6-8) in El Cajon.

Starter Dan Cabuling went three and two-third innings for the Warriors, allowing one run on two hits. Cabuling struck out six and walked two. Mitch Crocker took the mound in relief and went three and one-third innings, giving up four runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked one.

The loss was charge to Taylor Martin who pitched the eighth inning, giving up four runs on three hits. Martin struck out two but walked three.

San Diego relief pitcher Luis Rivas was awarded the win after pitching one and one-third scoreless innings and allowing two hits.

With the Warriors down by four, Jarratt Rouse led off the top of the eighth inning and was hit by a pitch. David Pennington then singled up the middle, moving Rouse to second. A single to right center by J.J. Turbin drove in Rouse and advanced Pennington to second. When Tim Leary popped up to center field, Pennington moved to third. Coby Cress then singled through the left side, driving in Pennington and moving Turbin over to second.

David Gabel grounded out to the pitcher, moving Cress to second and Turbin to third. Mitch Petrak brought both runners home with a single up the middle. Thomas Hocutt then singled and reached third on an error that also allowed Petrak to score and give Westmont a 6-5 lead.

However, the Hawks responded with four runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk to Garrison McLagan, a two-RBI single by Dawson Jones and an RBI single by Alex Mann.

The doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday at Russ Carr Field has been rescheduled to Tuesday due to the likelihood of rain in the Santa Barbara area. First pitch on Tuesday is planned for noon.
