Senior Mitch Crocker produced another complete game victory as Westmont (24-26-1) won the seventh game of the GSAC Baseball Tournament, defeating The Master's 7-4. The Warriors advance to take on Concordia (35-16) at 5:30 this evening. The Master's was eliminated from further tournament play.
"These guys have so much fight in them," said Westmont head coach Robert Ruiz. "I am proud of these guys and the way that they compete. They believe in each other and they believe in our process. It has been a process to get here and we are still not exactly where we want to be, but they don't give in. They are relentless. There is no question what the level of competitive will is in these guys."
Crocker, who won his fourth game in the last six days, allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked one.
"Mitch is showing everyone how fiercely competitive he is," said Ruiz. "Today what he showed us is how he can handle adversity. He had more adversity today than he had last week. He had the fortitude to drive through it. There is never a second of doubt in his face or in his body language."
"That is probably the biggest win I've had," said Crocker. "I am thankful that we were able to come out and score runs. I got comfortable on the mound and let them work."
The Warriors put numbers up on the scoreboard early on, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Lead-off hitter Brandon Gildea singled to center and was replaced at first by courtesy runner Steven Motush. Second baseman David Pennington produced a bunt single, advancing Motush to second.
That brought up J.J. Turbin who singled up the middle allowing Motush to score and Pennington to take second base. Missing from the line-up was Tim Leary who had injured his ankle in Wednesday's game against Biola. So, Coby Cress moved up in the batting order to the number four spot. Cress hit a ground ball to short resulting in Turbin being thrown out at second. Pennington, however, reached third and then scored on a Mustang's throwing error.
Westmont added two more runs in the fifth inning to give the Warriors a 4-0 advantage. Pennington led off with a single to right field and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Turbin. Cress stepped to the plate and delivered a home run to left field, driving in Pennington.
In the bottom the sixth, the Mustangs scored three times to narrow the Warriors' lead to just one. Jonathan Popadics reached on an infield single and took second on a wild pitch. Leighton then singled to center field, driving in Popadics and taking second on the throw to the plate.
Steven Karkenny drove a ball to center field and Leighton broke for third. The ball got away from Westmont third baseman David Gabel and Karkenny scored the second run of the inning.
After a walk to Joe Riddle, Chris Talley doubled down the left field line, moving Riddle over to third. Riddle scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Spencer Downs.
After a scoreless seventh, Westmont put up three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Mitch Petrack led off the inning with a single through the left side. Phil Prickett then took Petrak's place on the base pads. William Barring came into the game as a designated hitter and laid down a bunt single that moved Prickett to second. Hunter Christenson laid down another bunt and an attempt was made to throw out Prickett at third. However, Prickett beat the throw, resulting in the bases full of Warriors with no outs.
Trevor Christianson then pinch hit for Brent Fukushima and hit a ground ball to second. Pricket was thrown out at home, but the relay to first was too late to catch Christianson for a double play. After Gildea popped out to third to record the second out, A wild pitch allowed Barring to score, Christenson to take third and Christianson to take second. Pennington then singled up the middle to drive in both runners.
Crocker returned to the mound for the eighth and ninth innings. After giving up a lead-off home run to Karkenny in the bottom of the eighth, Crocker retired the next six batters in a row to secure the win.
If the Warriors succeed in defeating Concordia this evening, Westmont will advance to the championship game tomorrow. The game is scheduled to begin thirty minutes after the conclusion of tomorrow's twelve o'clock game, approximately three o'clock.
