Warriors Fall Short at Division II Coyotes

Box Score Westmont Men's Basketball (1-2) hit the road for the second time in three games on the young season in search of a redemptive road victory to remedy an away loss at La Sierra in their season opener. The Warriors played the NCAA Division II Coyotes of California State University San Bernardino (1-1) tightly throughout the first half, with both teams compiling very similar statistics in the initial 20 minutes. At the intermission, Westmont only trailed by four (40-36), due in part to the efforts of seniors C.J Miller (26 points, 7 rebounds), Jason Ritchey (12 points, 9 rebounds), and Brendan Hill (7 points, 9 assists).

Early in the second half, CSUSB pushed their lead to double digits. Senior guard Lacy Haddock (15 points, 14 assists) flourished, seemingly creating offense each time he touched the ball. Miller carried Westmont in the second half, amassing 21 of his 26 points in latter period. However, Westmont failed to seize a lead at any point during the game, and eventually fell to the Coyotes by a score of 88-81. One bright spot for the Warriors was their much improved free throw shooting. The team went perfect in the first half, knocking down all six of their attempts.

Overall, Westmont hit 17 of 20, or 85 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe – much improved from their 52.3 percent mark through two games this season. Two additional notable contributors for Westmont were senior guard Mantas Drungys (9 points, 2 rebounds) and sophomore guard Billy Keller (13 points, 3 rebounds). "I thought we fought hard, as well as fought back hard," offered up Westmont head coach John Moore.
"Early on, I thought we played a bit tentatively, but we got it going in the second half. We got bit by the turnover bug a little bit (Westmont turned the ball over 24 times) in critical situations, and even though we outre bounded (CSUSB) 46 to 35, there were key sequences that the offensive  rebounds went against us, and those two things proved to be key in our defeat." Westmont returns home to Murchison Gymnasium to face Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, November 23. A tip-off time has yet to be announced.
