A walk-off single through the left-side of the infield produced an unearned run for the Hawks of San Diego Christian (18-10, 9-10 GSAC) on Friday night in Poway, spoiling a solid pitching performance by Westmont's Torin Shaik. The run gave the Hawks a 2-1 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Warriors (16-13, 7-11).
In eight and one-third innings, Shaikh (3-3) gave up two runs, one earned, on 10 hits. He struck out five and walked two. The complete game win went to Gabriel Hemmer (3-4) who allowed one run on four hits, struck out seven and walked one.
Westmont scored in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. With two away, Brandon Gildea doubled down the left field line before Kevin Hammer walked. Will Barring then singled to left field, driving in Gildea.
The Warriors held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Hawks' Chase Skinner hit a lead-off triple to right field. He scored when Alex Mann singled through the left side.
In the bottom of the ninth, Garrison McLagan walked with one away and took second when Peter Hoyt singled through the right side. Gilbert Vierra then singled through the left side with Hoyt scoring on the play.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday in a doubleheader played at Cal State San Marcos. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
