(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Cody Howen provided all the ammunition the Warrior arsenal would need as Westmont Men's Soccer held on for a win in their first road contest of the year. With a final score of 1-0, the Warriors improve to a record of 3-1-0, while handing the Mariners of Marymount (Calif.) just their second loss on the season (5-2-0).

The only goal of the match arose in the sixty-eighth minute when midfielder Sean Siemens attacked from the center of the field and slid a pass left to an open Howen. Howen then fired the ball into the back of the net and past Mariner goalkeeper Christos Voglis for his second goal of the season.

Over the course of the match, the Warriors only managed to muster eight shots, four of which were on goal. Coach Dave Wolf attributed the shortage of shots to "injuries that kept midfielder Tanner Wolf and forward Nana Ayken from playing." He continued by stating that these injuries "definitely had an impact on our ability to pass the ball as well."

Defensively, the Warriors were constantly on their toes throughout the game. "As a result of our passing, we had to defend a lot. (Marymount) attacked very well, but none of their offensive movements came to fruition," affirmed Wolf.

Wolf gave a statement that encapsulated the entire game for the Warriors when he said, "It certainly was a 'bend but don't break' kind of game for us. We bent a lot but somehow kept them off the scoreboard. We received a couple of big (clutch) moments out of our goalkeeper (Josh Glover), and the goal from Howen ultimately sealed the deal."

After dropping the season opener, Westmont will try make it four wins in a row when they return home to Thorrington Field for their fifth game of the 2013 campaign.

That match will kick-off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, as the men take on Fresno Pacific.
