Westmont Prevails in Battle of Warriors

A penalty kick by Alison Hensley and a goal by Tiffany Dimaculangan were all the Westmont Warriors (4-0-1) need to defeat the Corban (Ore.) Warriors (2-3-1) on Monday afternoon at Thorrington Field. Goalkeeper Lindsey Smith picked up her second shutout of the year, producing three saves in the effort.

"Give credit to Corban," said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. "Coming off of two games, they were probably better out of the gate. Corban was organized and their defense was hard to penetrate.

"Then we started to find our rhythm, getting the go-ahead goals and lots of opportunities," continued the coach. "We definitely looked like we had some long minutes just 48 hours before, but I am proud of the team to get the result."

The Warriors first goal came in the thirtieth minute after K.J. Hornibrook was taken down hard in the box to set up Hensley's penalty kick.

Thirty-four seconds later, the Warriors scored again. Hornibrook charged toward the goal with a defender in tow. Corban goalkeeper Alexis Beattie came out to meet her and successfully blocked her kick.

However, the ball rolled over to Christine Adams on the right side with Beattie on the ground away from the goal. Adams sent it to the center of the field where Tiffany Dimaculangan kicked it past a lone Corban defender for the score.

"K.J. was again phenomenal for us today," noted Kiely. "She was determined to get to goal and created two opportunities for us."

"We've been going for seven days straight and it feels like 14," said Kiely. "The team needs a day off tomorrow and then we regroup for Southern Oregon who will be a very hard opponent on Saturday. They are difficult to figure out, are well organized and are well-structured defensively. We need to sort that out, move the ball well and play the way we are used to playing.

"We have two more games before conference – two more opportunities to sort some things out. We made a small adjustment, switching Kaitlynn (Durham) and (Amanda) Diesen. We tried it but it wasn't the way to go so we moved them back. These next couple of games will be sorting out some of the finer details like that. Today, we weren't good at the small stuff. We need to be good at the little things and we will use the next two weeks to make sure we are better at that."

Kick-off on Saturday is scheduled for one o'clock. The Warriors are 3-0 against Southern Oregon, including a 4-1 win last season and a 2-1 win in 2011.
