Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warriors Shutout Lions

Kelsey Steck In the highly competitive Golden State Athletic Conference race, #11 Westmont Women's Soccer (11-3. 6-2 GSAC) started the day in a tie for fourth place and ended the day in a three-way tie for first. The feat was accomplished in part due to Westmont's 1-0 win over #10 Vanguard (13-2-1, 6-2) in Costa Mesa.

Senior Kelsey Steck scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute.

"It was a great individual effort by Kelsey," said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. "She drove at a couple of defenders, beat them and got a very nice shot up. The keeper saved it but Kelsey was there for the follow-up and she put it nicely in the corner of the net."

Both teams got off 12 shots during the contest. Half of the Warriors shots were on goal compared to just two for the Lions.

"I thought Tiffany Dimaculangan was the player of the game and I thought Sophie Fuller was right there beside her," assessed Kiely. "They made a huge difference for us in a very tight game. We knew that we were going to be coming into a tough environment – Senior Day for Vanguard, on the road and a lot on the line. I'm proud of the team for stepping up in that way."

In other GSAC action, #18 Biola (12-3, 6-2) claimed a share of first place with a 1-0 win over San Diego Christian in overtime.

#8 Concordia (11-4-1, 5-2-1) fell into a tie with The Master's (10-4-1, 5-2-1) by dropping a 1-0 decision to Hope International on the Eagle's home field. The Master's was idle.

Two games remain in the GSAC season.

Saturday, Westmont will host Biola at noon in a battle of first place teams. Vanguard will enjoy a bye before playing twice next week. Also competing on Saturday will be Concordia and The Master as they try to settle the current tie for fourth place.

The Warriors have officially clinched a spot in the upcoming GSAC Tournament – though their seeding could range anywhere from first to fifth. A win on Saturday would make the Warriors the odds-on favorite to claim the number one seed and at least a share of the GSAC regular season championship.
