By Christy Cain (FULLERTON, Calif.) The Westmont women's volleyball team closed out their 2014 season with a quick win tonight against Hope International University (25-11, 25-7, 25-20). "It was a real pleasure getting to coach such a talented group of girls. In my opinion, we were the best unranked team out there. We improved as the season progressed and practices stayed competitive through the very end," said head coach Patti Cook.
While they had a bit of a rough start to their season, the women will finish with an 18-14 record, 9-7 in GSAC. There have been ups and downs, but this team has battled it out the entire way. Tonight's dominant win was a complete showcase of their ability. Their passers were getting the ball up, the setters were dishing out great sets and the hitters were putting it away time and time again.Â
Offensively the women were led by
Sydney Striff who had 10 kills, one error on 15 attempts. Right behind her was
Jessica McCann with an errorless nine kills on eleven swings. Both of them posted season high hitting percentages this evening (.600 and .818 respectively).
Defensively, the Warriors had a team total of 38 digs and five blocks. Their solid defense was able to hold Hope International to just 21 total kills this evening—making it difficult for them to score points.
For three seniors, tonight was the last time they will put on their jerseys, pull on their sweaty knee pads and lace up their shoes. Their collegiate run has officially come to an end.
"I'm so proud of the three seniors. They contributed so much to the team this year and to the program all four years. They are leaving a legacy of hard work, high standards of play and an intense desire to win," remarked Cook.
Madison Serrano will be finishing her collegiate career with a grand total of 1,379 total kills (331 this season) and 1,382 digs (343 this season). As an outside hitter, she has performed exceptionally well as an all-around player. She will move up to #7 in the Westmont career record books for total kills.
Senior setter
Heidi Thompson caps off her career with 1,835 total assists—989 of which she earned in this final season. She played in all 33 matches this year and executed a very effective offense for the Warriors.
Middle blocker
Ciena Colburn earned 221 kills in this final season, which is almost double of what she tallied her junior year. She had 17 solo blocks as a senior, and had a hand in 110 other block touches. With this final win, the Warriors close out a successful 2014 season with an 18-14 overall record, 9-7 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. [
