Warriors Fell Oaks

Second baseman Andrew Devian flips the ball to shortstop Joey Gonzales who is covering second. Starter Torin Shaikh (3-2) gave Westmont eight and one-third solid innings on the mound and catcher Jarratt Rouse went three for three at the plate as Westmont Baseball (9-9) posted a 12-2 win over the visiting Oaks of Menlo (7-3) on Friday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. Designated hitter Alex Bush was three for four at the plate, including a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

The Warriors posted a single run in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. Bush reached on a fielder's choice that produced the second out of the inning. After Bush advanced to second on a wild pitch, Rouse singled up the middle to drive in Bush.

Both of Menlo's runs came in the top of the fourth inning after lead-off batter Nick Quejado reached on an infield single and then stole second. One out later, Kyer Vega singled through the right side to move Quejado to third.

Aaron Suarez-Lopez then hit a hot shot to the mound that bounce far enough off of Shaikh's foot to allow Quejado to score, Vega to take second and Suarez-Lopez to reach first with a single. Two batters later, Sam Shapiro doubled down the right field line to drive in Vega.

Westmont wasted no time recovering the lead, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Will Barring and Bush opened with back-to-back singles. Rouse followed with a bunt single, filling the bases with Warriors with nobody out.

After Ryan Beveridge replaced Rouse at first as a courtesy runner, Michael Frigon singled to shallow center. Beveridge had to hold up on the play to see if the ball would be caught and was thrown out at first. However, Barring scored and Bush reached third.

Andrew Devian then produced the second bunt single of the inning to bring home Bush and move Frigon to second. A single up the middle by Joey Gonzales allowed Frigon to score and a throwing error brought in Devian as well.

In the sixth inning, Rouse led off with a double that missed by six inches clearing the left field fence. Beveridge again came in for Rouse and later scored on a ground ball by Brandon Gildea.

Westmont added three more in the seventh. The first came on a bases loaded walk by Frigon. The second run scored on a ground out by Devian and the third on a balk.

Before the two-run blast by Bush in the eighth, the Warriors picked up another run on a ground out by Pollex that drove in Gildea from third. Gildea had reached on a double down the left field line to start off the inning.

Shaikh, who threw 102 pitches in eight and one-third innings, allowed two runs on 10 hits while recording his third win of the season. He struck out three without allowing a walk. Freshman Sam Nathan came on in relief and retired both batters he faced to complete the victory for the Warriors.

Eric Davila (1-1) took the loss for Menlo after surrendering five runs on five hits in four innings.

The two teams will complete their series tomorrow in a doubleheader at Russ Carr Field. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
