Shaikh Halts Mustangs

Alex Bush Thirteen days since their last outing, Westmont Baseball (12-9, 5-8 GSAC) traveled to Santa Clarita to defeat #12 The Master's (22-4, 12-4) in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. It was the Mustang's first loss on their home field this season.

Starter Torin Shaikh claimed the win, his fourth of the season against two losses. Shaikh pitched six and two-third innings allowing two runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked three.

Devin Matson pitched a scoreless inning and one-third and allowing just one hit while facing five batters. Brandon Gildea pitched the ninth inning and picked up his second save of the season. He allowed one run and three hits.

Westmont scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth after Alex Bush led off with a double. Bush reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Will Barring and then scored on an infield single by Brent Fukushima deep in the hole between short and third.

In the top of the seventh, Westmont loaded the bases with no outs courtesy of a single by David Gabel, Bush reaching on an error and a single by Barring to shallow center field. Fukushima drove in Gabel and Bush with a single down the third baseline to make it a 3-0 game.

After Rouse reached on a fielder's choice bunt that retired Barring, Blake Matthias, pinch hitting for Chris Stroh, reloaded the bases with a single through the right side. Steven Pollex then delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Fukushima.

The Master's scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh inning to make it a 4-2 game, but Westmont took one run back in the top of the eighth. With one way, Bush walked, stole second and reached third on a passed ball. He then scored on sacrifice fly by Barring.

Gabel pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the win by allowing just one run.

The two teams will play a doubleheader header on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
