Warriors "Shaikh" Eagles

Torin Shaikh Westmont Baseball (22-14, 13-13 GSAC) took down #6 Concordia (29-11, 16-9) by a score of 6-3 on Friday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Russ Carr Field.

Torin Shaikh (5-3) gave the Warriors eight solid innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits. Shaikh struck out four and did not allow a walk. Hunter Christenson earned his second save of the season by pitching the ninth inning without allowing a hit.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Joey Gonzales connected for a one-out single then reached second on a single by Brandon Gildea. David Gabel then reached when his line drive to centerfield was allowed to drop so that the Eagles could retire courtesy runner Ryan Beveridge at second.

With two away and runners on the corners, Alex Bush, who went three for four on the day with a run scored and three RBIs, doubled to right center field, driving in both Gonzalez and Gabel.

In the top of the third, the Eagles turned a lead-off single by Daniel Shine into three runs. After Justin Hodges advanced Shine to second with a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Goodman doubled down the left field line to score Shine. Goodman took third when Spencer Nielsen ground out to third.

Nolan Clark stepped up to the plate next and doubled down the right field line, driving in Goodman for the second run of the inning. Clark scored the go-ahead run when Robert Shiroky reached on an error.

The Eagles would not score again, but the Warriors pushed across a single run in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

In the fifth, an RBI single by Gabel drove in Steven Pollex who had led off the inning by walking. The sixth inning saw Will Barring score from third when Rudy Leon hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield.

After Pollex led off the seventh with a double to right, Gonzales laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Pollex to third. A deep fly to right field served as a sacrifice to bring in Pollex. Bush accounted for the final run when he led off the eighth inning with a crushing home run to right field.

Westmont and Concordia will conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
