(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) After less than 24 hours since their last match, the Westmont women's volleyball team took the court again today at Murchison gymnasium. Despite the quick turnaround, the Warriors were able to come out in full force this afternoon to win a quick three game match against Arizona Christian (25- 13, 25-21, 25-16).
The Warriors came quickly out of the gate in the first set, gaining an immediate 3-0 lead and never allowing the Firestorm to close the gap. Westmont's offense was on fire and they not only out killed the Firestorm, but doubled their kill count with Westmont tabbing 14 kills to Arizona Christians' seven. Senior Heidi Thompson ran a very evenly distributed offense that resulted in every single Westmont attacker on the court tallying between two to four kills in the first game. Thompson was not only setting the ball out to all of her hitters, but was continually dumping the ball over the net, racking up four kills for herself this afternoon.
The energy did not let up going into the second game. While they played Arizona Christian point-for-point for the first ten minutes of the set, once the Warriors hit a score of 8-8, Senior Madison Serrano took off running and never looked back. Serrano had four kills in a row to spark an 11-2 run that gave the Warriors the confidence that they needed to win the set. Nine of Serrano's game high of 15 kills came in the second set as she carried her team to victory.
The Warriors closed out the match with a fast 25-16 win. Not only was the defense scrappy, but they tallied a couple of aces, a handful of blocks and a match high team hitting percentage of .367. Today was a day where everything just seemed to work for the ladies on the court as they improved their overall record to 8-7 on the season and 2-1 in GSAC.
Standout performances came from not only Senior Madison Serrano who notched 15 kills, but also from Sydney Striff who tallied eight kills and three blocks for the match.
The Warriors will head down to Costa Mesa, Calif. on Tuesday September 23 to take on Vanguard University at 7PM.
